HODINKEE: Antiquorum To Sell Philippe-Pierre Cousteau’s Patent-Pending, Double-Red Rolex Sea-Dweller, And Why Jason Heaton Is So Excited About It

The Cousteau name is synonymous with diving and underwater exploration and the cachet of the mere surname itself lends credibility and value to anything attached to it. We’ve featured a few dive watches worn by Cousteaus here before, like the orange DOXAs worn by both Jean-Michel and his son Fabien. But despite the family’s long association with DOXA, there were also a lot of other marques on Cousteau wrists over the years — OMEGA, Blancpain, Aquastar, and of course, Rolex. On September 30th, Antiquorum will be including one of those Cousteau Rolexes in its Important Watches auction and it is a watch that would be important even without the pedigree of its original owner. It is a 1967 Sea Dweller, reference 1665 that was worn by the late Philippe Cousteau. Let’s take a look at the man and the watch.
